All of us at RHCI were overwhelmed at this heartfelt story Pam Scholten Special Events Coordinator at The Orange Senior Center shared with us about a project we recently completed out there.
Rick and Llana,
It has been so great to have your guys at our Center this week and I can't tell you how excited we are to FINALLY be getting the add-on to our little thrift store.
I don't know how much you know about this store, but it is all donated items that come into the center and they are sold to the seniors who come every day. Many of our seniors are physically not able to go to malls so this little store is the only "shopping opportunity" they have. They buy small household items, CD's, movies, clothes, stuffed animals, and things like that. The lady who runs this shop is Rita....85 years old and spunky as can be. She has been in charge of the store for over four years. It's very crowded and cold in the winter and hot in the summer. She comes in everyday at 6:00 a.m. to get things ready to open at 8:00 when the seniors arrive. She personally prices everything and manages all the money. All the proceeds go to pay for parties and entertainment for all the seniors. Last year they averaged over $2000.00 a month. That's a LOT of quarters and dollars and was a lot of hard work for Rita and her helpers.
I wanted to explain this to you because our executive director, Tom, promised Rita that if and when we ever got to do the add-on, she could put her handprints and initials in the concrete. She was beyond excited that today was the day. Tim, not only allowed her to do this, but helped her and got excited with her. He was just WONDERFUL! I've attached some pictures so you can see the "ceremony".
We are beyond grateful for, not just the work you are doing, but the "heart" with which it is being done. Thank you so, so much!!
